I’m currently working on this acrylic painting. I’m at my favorite part, which is applying glazes, adding contrast and detail. But before I go on, I thought I’d pose this quandry:
I’ve added so many layers in the background, I’ve really come to like this blue. But, I originally intended something much more subdued, dark and moody. Leave me your thoughts – - tone down the blue background? Or leave it bold?

You’ve reached a very good mix of color on your background, so, I say, don’t change it. Besides if you darken or subdue it, I think you might lose the wonderful shadows.
Leave it bold. The primary blue enhances this child-themed subject.
Keep the bold blue! The colors enhance each other making a nice combo. Like the unique angle of the tricycle, too.
Ii don’t usually leave comments on blogs but after reading your three other comments I thought I should actually weigh in….only because I don’t really agree with them.
Although it has become a gorgeous blue, I think you should go with a darker, moodier background…the detail on the red is awesome and I think having it against something more subdued and dark will be a good contrast, like it’ll make the trike (and details) pop. I think you were really onto to something with that idea.
As far as the blue enhancing the child-theme right now….I agree, and that’s probably the only thing I don’t like about it as a whole. And I don’t see the colors enhancing each other, I see them competing. I think the moodier background will give it a depth it might need…..depending on your intentions, of course.
It’s great! Good luck!
