This poor little guy, Daniel, is a project gone awry. The image above is a digitally enhanced scan of a pencil drawing study for a glass casting. The casting has been rendered, but not without technical difficulty. First, the mold materials did not harden. After salvaging the oil clay positive, reworking it, another mold was poured. This mold slightly cracked during the firing process, leaving me with flashing to grind and polish. It is still a work in process and I have to ask myself if the final piece meets my expectations.
Not every piece is a winner. Artists everywhere have a closet full of “dead soldiers,” waiting to be re-worked, rescued and so forth. I wonder if I’ll finish the glass rendering of Daniel. I may be satisfied with the digitized pencil study posted here.
